IB Language B

OVERVIEW:

In the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate IB, Language Acquisition is divided into four main courses: Language ab initio Standard Level, Language ab initio Higher Level, Language B Standard Level, and Language B Higher Level.

Language ab initio is designed for students with little or no prior experience in the target language. IB Language ab initio SL introduces students to the fundamentals of communication through a variety of everyday themes, including personal identity, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization, and sharing the planet. The course focuses on developing practical skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, enabling students to communicate effectively in familiar situations.

IB Language ab initio HL builds on the same foundations but requires a greater level of linguistic competence, accuracy, and cultural understanding. Students engage with more complex texts and communicative tasks, develop a broader vocabulary, and are expected to express themselves with increased fluency and sophistication across a wider range of contexts.

Language B is intended for students who already have some prior knowledge of the target language. IB Language B SL develops students’ ability to communicate confidently and effectively while exploring cultural perspectives through authentic texts and real-world contexts. The course emphasizes language acquisition through meaningful interaction and encourages students to engage with diverse viewpoints and cultural products.

IB Language B HL includes all SL content but requires a deeper understanding of linguistic structures, more advanced communication skills, and the study of literary works in the target language. Students analyze and discuss a broader range of texts, develop greater intercultural awareness, and demonstrate a higher degree of accuracy, fluency, and critical thinking. It is particularly well suited for students considering university studies involving languages, international relations, humanities, communication, or global studies.
