IB Mathematics
OVERVIEW:
In the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate IB, Mathematics is divided into four courses: Analysis and Approaches (AA) Standard Level and Higher Level, and Applications and Interpretation (AI) Standard Level and Higher Level.
Analysis and Approaches (AA) is the more theory-oriented pathway. IB Math AA SL focuses on algebraic techniques, functions, trigonometry, statistics, and introductory calculus, with a strong emphasis on symbolic manipulation and analytical reasoning. It is designed for students who are comfortable with abstract mathematics and prefer structured, formula-based problem-solving.
IB Math AA HL is significantly more rigorous and abstract, covering all SL content in greater depth and extending into advanced calculus, complex algebra, sequences and series, and more sophisticated proof and reasoning techniques. It is particularly suited for students planning to study mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, or other highly quantitative fields at university.
Applications and Interpretation (AI) is the more practical and real-world-oriented pathway. IB Math AI SL emphasizes statistics, probability, mathematical modeling, and the use of technology to analyze real-life data and scenarios. It focuses less on abstract algebra and more on interpreting results, understanding trends, and applying mathematics in context.
IB Math AI HL includes all SL content but goes deeper into statistical analysis, modeling, functions, and quantitative reasoning, often working with more complex data and real-world systems. It is well suited for students interested in subjects such as economics, business, social sciences, environmental studies, or other fields where interpreting data and applying mathematics to practical problems is essential.
